"The Wolf of Allendale" is a fever dream. One where you wake and scrawl a page of words in a stream of consciousness. The herald for something bigger, looming into frame. You know that feeling in the pit of your stomach, that gnawing you've felt for the longest time? That's "The Wolf of Allendale". Musically, "Wolf..." is deceptively buoyant, bouncing from section to section. Lyrically, it tumbles from gentle admonishment, to outright despair throughout its three distinct acts.
The writing and recording of "Wolf..." was fraught. Initial recordings lost. Hard drives scoured. Personnel scattered across the world. In the end - the pieces were stitched together in the heart of Sheffield. Like it always is.
lyrics
I've lived many afterlives, I've waited too long
I mistook my air supply for wings, through all
I was a faithful son, a useless architect
I've been awake too long, and empty argument
I've burned through all sympathy, I've changed the start
Only in useless dreams are we pulled apart
I'm born in a full collapse, in the only town
I've been a tangled heart, a broken monument
Only to waste it all, a mealy mouthed reply
Only in useless dreams are we pulled apart
I'm in another time - in a full collapse
I burned every photograph that you survived in
Here, time runs backwards now, we are rectified
There's no way, you will see - time destroys everything
Every night the pieces fit, I break them up - begin again
I made a pact, if I should fall, I'll leave a trail for you to follow
Are we no better?
Every night, the darkness comes
To see me off to lower worlds
If I ever win the war, I'll fall into the ground below
I can get them all to see, all again, all again
I'm nothing more, but a parasite
A tune I've lost
I waged a war on losing things
A fool I am
Tidal waves, and pesticides, a ruined place
I've never been so anaesthetised, when you were there
I've learned to be an alibi, in time we've lost

A perambulation down the by now familiar trail but this time the weather has conspired with other atmospheric forces to reveal the stunning views.
Additional: I find this and their other albums provide the perfect soundtrack for driving in Wales. Moth Ear Earth

A very good album. One should not miss this very creative, intelligent and thought-provoking album. With this album Gilmore Trail surpases many of the bands in the genre. Clear sound, high production value and memorable melodies throughout. Hope they get many followers.
